In Delphi, to the southeast of the Temple of Apollo, is the Sanctuary of Athena Pronea. Before reaching the Temple of Apollo, the sanctuary was the first part of Delphi that visitors arriving from the east could see. The name Pronea, which means "before the Temple", came about in this way. Because Athena Pronea, who was revered as Pythia's protector, required sacrifices before receiving an oracle, this sanctuary was of particular significance.
